Colorado Springs Police have tracked an identity theft case of a 78-year-old woman to someone who had recently stayed with her as a guest.

The unidentified woman, who lives on Zane Place, called police to tell them suspicious and unauthorized charges had been made on her debit card, and she couldn't find it.

After contacting the woman's bank, officers traced one of the transactions to a convenience store on Maizeland Road. Through video surveillance, officers say Essie Garner Jr. was seen using the woman's debit card.

Garner had recently been a houseguest of the woman's, and police say he admitted to taking the card from her purse without her permission.

Garner was arrested Saturday, and booked into the Criminal Justice Center on an identity theft charge.
