Polis joins effort to repeal gay marriage ban

Colorado Democrat Jared Polis is joining 75 other House members to sponsor a bill that would repeal the federal ban on recognition of gay couples.

The bill being introduced Tuesday would repeal a 1996 law denying federal benefits to same-sex couples. However, backers concede there is little chance the bill will succeed this year.

President Barack Obama has called the "Defense of Marriage Act" discriminatory. But there has been little movement so far in his presidency to address gay marriage. There also has been no movement for repeal in the Senate, where it would be difficult to gain the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster.

Polis last year became the first openly gay man elected to Congress as a non-incumbent.
