Polis seeks insurance waivers for 'resort' area

DENVER (AP) - A Colorado congressman is seeking a health insurance waiver for mountain-dwellers in his district where rates are higher than in other areas.

Rep. Jared Polis said Wednesday he will seek a waiver from the Obama administration so folks in Colorado's geographical "resort" insurance rating area will not be required to participate in the Affordable Care Act this year. Health insurance rates in the high country are higher than other parts of Colorado.

The Democrat from Boulder tells The Denver Post he was dismayed that residents in parts of his district have higher premiums.

In some cases, rates are 50 percent higher in the "resort" region than other parts of the state. Glenwood Springs officials have also expressed concern about the "resort" rating they've been assigned.
