Potato farming dwindling because of water shortage

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - Weld County is losing some of its potato crop this year because of a shortage of water.

The last local large-scale grower of the crop, Strohauer Farms in LaSalle, plans to raise half of its potatoes outside of the state.

According to the Greeley Tribune, Weld County has gone from growing 3,800 acres of potatoes on 66 farms in the 1980s to what's expected to be about 550 acres this year, from two farmers.
