Power restored in much of storm-battered Northeast

The lights are back on for many of the million-plus customers in the Northeast affected by a storm last week that dealt the region snow, rain and hurricane-force winds.

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch on Monday called restoration efforts "the most rapid" he's ever seen. On Friday, about 360,000 homes and businesses were without electricity - more than half the state. That was down to about 40,000 on Monday. Blustery weather temporarily increased some outages in Maine.

As of Monday afternoon, the number was down to around 10,000 for the state's largest utility. In Massachusetts, National Grid has restored power to nearly all of the 90,000 customers affected. In New York state, outages are down to about 43,600. Service in Vermont has been restored to more than 91,000 affected customers.
