The head of Colorado's prison system has declined to tell Sterling residents exactly how an inmate escaped from a nearby maximum security prison.

Ari Zavaras, director of prisons for the Colorado Department of Corrections, told a town meeting Tuesday that Douglas Alward gathered materials inside the prison that helped him escape. Zavaras refused to elaborate, citing security reasons.

Alward was serving time for attempted murder, assault, kidnapping and burglary when he escaped on Aug. 22. He surrendered three days later at a home near Yuma, where he had been holding a woman hostage. It was Alward's fourth escape. He has been placed in solitary confinement at another Colorado prison.

The Colorado Department of Corrections is headquartered in Colorado Springs.
