A proposal to increase certain utilities could result in a decrease in your overall utilities bill.

Colorado Springs Utilities is proposing to increase electric and natural gas rates for 2011. Water rate increases were approved in May.

If the rates are approved, an average home would see a 7% increase in electric, a 16.7% decrease in natural gas, a 12% increase in water rates, and no change to waste water. Even though base natural gas rates would go up, because wholesale natural gas costs are lower than expected right now, the overall impact results in a decrease. The overall impact on an average January monthly bill would be a 2.8% decrease.

The final vote on utilities rates is expected in December.
