Pueblo Co. Sheriff's Office recruits horse riders

The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office is looking for deputies and volunteers to join its mounted patrol unit and posse program.

On Tuesday, the sheriff's office held tryouts at the state fairgrounds in Pueblo. Volunteers and their horses would assist with search and rescues as part of the department's posse program.

The sheriff's office is also recruiting from within the department--right now they have four members. Mounted patrols are often used during large events for crowd control. "If you had ten horses side by side walking up towards a crowd, the psychological affect, people would tend to back away," said Sgt. John Pannunzio with the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.

About a dozen people tried out Tuesday. If you would like more information contact the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.
