In a meeting that lasted almost 7 hours, the Pueblo County Planning Commission approved two measures that might one day result in a nuclear power plant being built southeast of Pueblo.
The 24,000 acre site south of Grape Road and east of Huerfano Road would include a nuclear power plant as well as other kinds of energy production, including solar, wind, geothermal and biomass. The proposal specifically stays away from coal-fired energy production.
Fourteen people spoke in favor of the zoning change, 15 spoke against it. In the end, the vote was 5 to 3 in favor of allowing the plan to proceed.
The plan now goes to the Pueblo County Commissioners for a hearing on March 15.
