School districts across the state have to tighten their belts and brace for budget cuts across the board. You can now add Pueblo School District 60 to that growing list. Many teachers in District 60 are not happy about proposed budget cuts. It has many worried they could lose money or even worse, their job.
In all the school district needs to cut between 6 and 8 million dollars for the upcoming budget. A lot of it is due to state wide funding cuts for education. The largest of those proposed cuts, a reduction of 60 teachers that would save around 3.7 million dollars. The teachers of district 60 say they're already feeling the pinch of performing up to CSAP standards. "The cuts should not come off of the backs of teachers." argued one D-60 teacher at the meeting, "We are the only ones whose feet are being held to the fire on a daily basis for CSAP scores."
The school board will have several work sessions to hash out budget reductions including one this Thursday. The final budget is scheduled to be approved sometime in June.
