The Pueblo East boys' basketball team may have lost the 4A state championship game Saturday night to Sierra, but the players gained a lot of respect for their great comeback effort and the class they displayed on the court. Junior forward Darius Allen is one of those players and he is this week's "Loaf ‘N Jug High School Athlete of the Week."
Darius was one of several key bench players in the Eagles state championship run. But his story goes much deeper. His life has been compared to Michael Oher of the Baltimore Ravens. Oher's life has been dramatized in the book and movie "The Blind Side."
A year ago Darius was living a very hard life in Kentucky. He admits he made some bade choices. He moved to Pueblo to live with his aunt and uncle and turned his life around. He made significant contributions to both the football and basketball teams and made even greater strides in the classroom. No longer is Darius getting poor grades and failing classes, he is a 4.0 student. That's the kind of turn-around that far transcends sport.
