Pueblo faces $9 million budget shortfall in '11

Pueblo's city manager is projecting a $9 million budget shortfall in 2011. On Monday, Jerry Pacheco told City Council he can balance the budget without laying-off workers.

Pacheco's recommendations include: no additional funding for non-profits; increase code enforcement programs to boost revenues; and keep 26 vacant positions un-filled, including seven police officer jobs and several administrative jobs.

"We've unfunded some police officer positions which it creates some issues in the community because our number one task is public safety," said Jerry Pacheco, Pueblo City Manager. "But to justify that we're un-funding positions at the highest level that's how serious it is.

Pacheco says even with these savings, the City of Pueblo may have to use $4 to $5 million in reserves to balance next year's budget.
