John French Jr. will be spending the rest of his life in prison. This morning he was convicted of murdering his 8-year old daughter at their mobile home in Pueblo County.
The shooting happened on April 14, 2011. French shot his daughter Desirea once in the head and then shot himself in the head twice. He was hospitalized but survived. Investigators say at the hospital French was overheard saying "I can't believe I did that to my daughter."
French was found guilty on all counts he was facing: 1st degree murder after deliberation; 1st degree murder victim under 12 and defendant in a position of trust; and child abuse resulting in death. The jury deliberated for about four hours.
According to Pueblo County District Attorney Jeff Chostner, French was immediately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. "This was a serious crime, taking the life of a child," said Chostner. "This is certainly what we argued for," he added.
