PUEBLO - A Pueblo man is in the hospital after being hit in a drive by shooting. It happened just after 3:00 p.m. on Portland Avenue between 8th and 9th Streets on the east side.
The police say Leonard Rodriguez, 21, was alert and talking with paramedics as he was being taken to the hospital. He was found by himself near this grey car when officers arrived. Anywhere from five to nine rounds were fired during the exchange.
"Apparently this guy was just standing there and from what we understand, they just came up and caught him off guard," explained Sgt. Eric Gonzales, Public Information Officer with the Pueblo Police Department.
Gonzales couldn't say whether gang activity was suspected yet in the shooting.
A detective spotted four teenagers riding in a gray Ford Taurus leaving the area near the crime scene. Witnesses gave a matching vehicle description for the suspects.
The detective followed the car to City Park where the four ran ditched the car and ran off on foot. Officers chased them down and took them into custody. Their ages range from 16 to 18 years.
Andrea Archibeque lives in the neighborhood and tells News 5 she is worried about her safety because of this and other crimes that have happened recently.
"There's been two burglaries up there and it's just getting out of control."
She thinks drug addicts might be behind the break-ins.
The shooting happened a little more than a week after another shooting near the crime scene involving two brothers who chased and fired at each other from their cars. Sergeant Gonzales said detective don't have reason to suspect the two incidents are connected.
