PUEBLO - A 13-year-old boy from Pueblo is recovering at Children's Hospital in Denver after being treated for a pellet gun wound after he was apparently shot trying to steal marijuana from backyard grow. Pueblo police found the boy laying unconscious in the street at around 2:30 a.m. Saturday near the area of Pine and Summit.
According to a police department news release, the pellet hit the teen in the chest and rested between vital organs. He was transported to Denver for treatment due to the possibility of complications and was last reported to be in stable condition.
The suspected shooter, 34-year-old Jason Lucero, is being held at the Pueblo County Jail on $25,000 bond on a charge of Felony 2nd Degree Assault.
When detectives questioned Lucero, he initially stated that he walked out onto his porch and shot an intruder. However, the police believe the teen was shot while in a neighbor's yard.
Several tall marijuana plants are visible from the back alley of the home in 400 block of Washington Street. Neighbors tell News 5 they saw officers removing boxes from the home over the weekend. The investigation is ongoing.
