Pueblo's new $240 million wind turbine factory has started production. On Monday, Vestas held a christening ceremony to celebrate the first tower built by workers.
"They used to christen ships as a favor to the gods to bring success to the crew, for good luck. We're tapping back on the Danish heritage and culture and we're christening this tower to bring us good luck in our market," said Tony Knopp, General Manager of Vestas in Pueblo.
The tower weighs 25 tons and measures 80-feet long. The Danish company says four towers will be used to build one turbine.
Sections of the plant are still under construction, however Vestas says when fully operational it hopes to build about 4,000 tower pieces a year.
