Quick thinking pilot survives loss of power

A Colorado Springs man is a little shaken up but safe after making an emergency landing in field outside of Meadow Lake Airport Wednesday morning.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says Robert Myers, 70, was flying to the Springs from Alamosa when his 1997 Darrow Steven single engine plane lost power.

Myers made an emergency landing in a field just east of the airport near Curtis Road. Tom DeBoalt and another pilot were flying near the airport at the time and spotted Myer's plan in the field.

"Around here there's a lot of places to land," DeBoalt said. "He couldn't make the field, he made the right choice, where guys end up in a world of hurt is if they try to make the field, get their airspeed slow and stall before they get there."

Myers was the only person onboard and was not injured. The plane's landing gear and propeller were damaged but the rest was in good shape.
