EL PASO COUNTY - Sheriff Terry Maketa's campaign manager has joined the grassroots effort to have him recalled.
Those leading the effort have about two weeks left to gather the remaining signatures needed to place the recall question on the November ballot. They've already gathered more than half of the 44,000 signatures needed.
News 5 found volunteers collecting signatures downtown on Friday morning.
"As his campaign manager, I feel it's my civic duty to come out and say this is not who I elected," says Wendy Habert. "This is not the man I once loved. The man I thought was a very quintessential leader for this community."
Despite allegations of sexual favoritism and misconduct within his office, the sheriff has had outspoken support from the community. Maketa's office remains unable to comment on the recall effort.
