PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Apr. 23, 2011) - CSU-Pueblo's Spring 'Red/White Game' went down to the wire Saturday as the two split squads took the game to overtime, with the White Team winning 19-16.
In a Spring Game that featured full game jerseys and a pregame "draft" where players chose teams, the game was exactly what Pack coaches hoped for - an evenly-matched game where the offense showed it could score against a tough defense while the defense didn't break in big moments.
Field goals ruled much of the game as kicker Kyle Major (Sr., Littleton, Colo.), fielding the kicking duties for both squads, booted a total of five field goals - three for the White Team and two for the Red Team - missing a chance to win the game for the White Team in the final seconds when coaches chose to "ice the kicker," calling a time out before his kick, in an attempt to preserve an overtime period.
Only three touchdowns were scored, and two came through the air. In the second quarter, White quarterback, Jon Kuzava (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) threw a 27-yard touchdown to Da'Quan Cartwright (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.), which gave the White Team a commanding 13-3 lead in the third quarter.
After Ross Dausin (Jr., San Antonio, Tex.) ran in a quarterback sneak for a game-tying touchdown for the Red Team late in the fourth quarter, Kuzava tossed the game-winning touchdown in overtime.
With the Red Team leading 16-13 in overtime and White given the opportunity to win the game with a touchdown, Kuzava threw the game-winner on the first play to Paul Browning (RFr., Widefield, Colo.) to deliver the 19-16 win.
The game concluded the CSU-Pueblo Spring Football season in front of an estimated 500 fans and capped an action-packed day at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl, which featured the Spank Blasing Run/Walk in the morning and a youth-oriented "Stretch with the Wolves" before the Spring Game.
