New research suggests women who take estrogen after a hysterectomy do not increase their risk for lung cancer.

Previous studies on the association of lung cancer with hormone therapy have been mixed -- especially the influence of estrogen alone.

Researchers at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute in California assigned more than 10,000 post-menopausal women to take either estrogen or a placebo.

There was only one more death from lung cancer in the estrogen group, suggesting estrogen alone is not associated with lung cancer diagnosis or death in women with hysterectomies.

The results of the study are published online in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
