Elder abuse can lead to tragic outcomes and that's why senior agencies say it's important to get your loved one the help they need.
Equally important is taking care of yourself, however.
Agencies say if you are not able to provide the right care, it's important to be honest with yourself and hand those responsibilities over to someone who can.
There are many resources in Southern Colorado, including Silver Key Senior Services, Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging, and the Alzheimer's Association on Senior Aging that can help. Additional services can be found in the Senior Information and Assistance Directory.
"It's a challenge for people to become a caregiver for a loved one," says Lorri Orwig, Chief of Development at Silver Key. "Sometimes you think that as the child it's your responsibility to do that but it takes a great deal of patience."
She says it can be difficult to work with people and be responsible for their decisions.
It doesn't necessarily have to be a financial burden -- it could be emotional.
Most importantly, police say if you suspect an elder is being abused, you should contact authorities immediately.
