Retail store for foster kids to open in downtown Colorado Springs

The life of a foster kid isn't an easy one; many are in and out of homes their whole lives, and they often have very few possessions. A new store opening in downtown Colorado Springs aims to change that.

Nancy Rose has been a foster parent for 15 years; in that time, she's hosted more than a dozen children. "When these children come to you, they don't usually come with much of anything," Rose told News 5's Jacqui Heinrich in an interview.

Because the state doesn't allow foster kids to get driver's licenses until they're out of state custody, it's nearly impossible for them to hold down a job and buy things other 'normal' teenagers have. That's why a group of volunteers from Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children decided to open The Hanger. "We've actually had teenagers who have never walked into a store, picked something out, tried it on, paid for it, and taken it home ," Jane Hegstrom, a volunteer with C.A.S.A. said.

The Hanger is the first and only retail store in the area created exclusively to serve the 300+ foster kids between the ages of 12 and 21 in El Paso and Teller Counties. The store allows kids to come in once a month and pick out 5 items free of charge. The store will also employ foster kids to give them a glimpse into the working world, something many of them never see before they exit the system. It's something Nancy Rose says will improve their lives like nothing else. "As foster parents, even with our own birth children, we can't always give them everything they want or we want for them and this is an opportunity to bless them," Rose Said.

The Hanger is financed through donations from the public and run out of an empty retail space one man donated to the cause. The grand opening is set for this Saturday at 1:00 PM.

If you'd like to donate gently used clothing or accessories, they're welcome-- and your donation is tax deductible. Donations can be brought to The Hanger between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM on Saturdays. If you need to make a donation outside those times, you can bring it to the C.A.S.A office.
