Rockies add Giambi, 3 others to active roster

The Colorado Rockies have added former AL MVP Jason Giambi to its active roster.

The Rockies on Tuesday also added right-hander Joel Peralta, left-hander Randy Flores and catcher Paul Phillips.

The 38-year-old Giambi signed a minor league contract with the Rockies Aug. 24 and was assigned to Triple-A Colorado Springs. He hit .444 (8-for-18) with four RBI and six walks in six games. He hit homers in back-to-back games Aug. 29-30.

Before joining the Rockies, Giambi hit .193 (52-for-269) with 11 home runs and 40 RBI in 83 games for the Oakland Athletics this season. He played 58 games at first base before the club released him Aug. 7.

The Rockies recalled pitchers Greg Reynolds and Greg Smith to make room for Giambi and Phillips.
