Getting to school is about to get a little safer for some students in the Springs. The city was awarded $500,000 to improve the routes to Mountain Vista and Lincoln Elementary Schools.

The grant came from the Colorado Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School program, which helps children to walk and bike to school safely.

"Sometimes they're often bused very short distsances simply because the infrastructure isn't there," said Kristin Bennett, a transportation planner with the city.

Bennett says construction will hopefully begin in 2011.

The city also recieved a $90-thousand grant for a traffic safety education program in District 2.
