DENVER (AP) - The Colorado Rockies have purchased the contract of Jay Payton from Triple-A Colorado Springs, bringing the veteran outfielder back to the majors for the first time since 2008.
The team also purchased the contract of catcher Paul Phillips on Tuesday and recalled right-hander Edgmer Escalona, along with designating reliever Taylor Buchholz for assignment.
All three players are available for the game Tuesday night against Cincinnati.
With the Rockies in the thick of the NL wild card race, the team elected to go with the experience of the 37-year-old Payton over a younger player.
Payton has played 11 seasons in the majors with six different teams, but didn't play last season.
He was hitting .323 in 116 games with the Sky Sox this year.
