A potential state wide grocery worker strike has been averted after the announcement Wednesday that Safeway employees with the Colorado United Food and Commercial Workers union ratified the chains last, best and final offer.

After months of bargaining and heated debates, the super market giant presented employees with the final offer in November, 2009. All 68 bargaining units voted on the contract in December but only 14 approved it with Colorado Springs and Pueblo among those who rejected it.

On February 4th an identical offer was submitted to the remaining units for a revote. The final votes were counted Tuesday with all remaining regions accepting the contract. The acceptance of the new contract means around 7000 UFCW represented employees in Colorado will be under contract until 2013.
