Safeway and unionized Colorado grocery workers are heading back to the bargaining table today in efforts to reach a new long-term contract. United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 represents about 17,000 workers at Safeway, King Soopers, City Market and Albertsons whose contracts expired May 9.

Employees have been working without contracts or under a number of contract extensions, as all the chains try to reach new labor agreements. Safeway workers have voted to authorize a strike if talks deteriorate, but they are still on the job.
