Sand Dunes fire slows

The Medano Fire at the Sand Dunes continues to burn, but its growth is slow. As of Thursday morning it was reported at 5,335 acres, up 444 from Wednesday.
The fire is burning in the Great Sand Dunes National Park as well as on San Isabel National Forest in Huerfano County. For the most part, the fire is being allowed to burn. The fire is moving to the south east. The hottest part of the fire is on 12,000 foot Mount Zwischen.
Smoke from the fire blew back into the San Luis Valley Wednesday and that may be an issue for area residents for the next few days.
Some trails and roads are closed because of the fire, including Medano Pass Road and Rainbow Trail south of Music Pass. The Great Sand Dunes National Park is open.
Briefings for area residents are planned Friday at 7 p.m. at Mosca (Sangre de Cristo High School Gym), and at Moffat School on Monday (6/28) at 7 p.m.
