Sandbagging under way in Red River communities

One of the people coordinating volunteer sandbaggers near the Red River in North Dakota says today is going to be a "critical day" for getting people to help.

Officials say volunteer turnout on the first day of sandbagging was steady in Fargo, N.D. and neighboring Moorhead, Minn. - but slow outside the cities.

Cass County volunteer coordinator Chip Ammerman says turnout might have been a bit light yesterday because it was the first day.

Moorhead City Manager Michael Redlinger says the city is on pace to have sandbagging done by Saturday.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has pushed back the expected 20-foot crest of the Red River in the Fargo and Moorhead areas until Sunday. Thousands more people have bought flood insurance after last year's damage.
