A heap of mangled metal abutted a hanger at Meadow Lake Airport in Peyton this morning.
An Ultra Light plane carrying two people crashed at 7:23 a.m.
The pilot told rescue crews he felt something was wrong with the plane. He said that something may have broke or it was a mechanical problem. Soon afterwards, the plane veered right and nose-dived to the ground going between two hangers before crashing into another.
Lt. Lari Sevene from the El Paso County Sheriff's office says, "They were in-flight...it was not during landing or take-off...they were actually in-flight when the crash happened."
Sevene did not have a reason as to why there have been two crashes within 24-hours. She did, however, say,"We've been having some really good weather lately, especially in the mornings. So, I would imaging that's increasing the amount of activity that's going on at the airport."
Sevene adds that both men sustained significant injuries. The pilot was immediately taken to a hospital and the passenger was air-lifted by Flight for Life to a local hospital for treatment.
The FAA will be conducting an investigation.
