Senate approves North Dakota nickname change

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The North Dakota Senate has voted to allow the University of North Dakota to get rid of its Fighting Sioux nickname.

Senators voted 39-7 on Tuesday to repeal an earlier bill that ordered UND to keep the Fighting Sioux athletics name and an American Indian logo.

The new bill says UND can get rid of the nickname, but it can't approve another name before January 2015.

The measure now goes to the North Dakota House. The bill's supporters believe it will be approved, but the vote could be close.

UND wants to drop the nickname and logo to get out from under NCAA sanctions. The NCAA says the nickname is "hostile and abusive" to American Indians.
