Senate passes immigration bill

The U.S. Senate passed a sweeping immigration overhaul bill in a bi-partisan vote, making it the first attempt to tackle immigration reform in six years.

Fourteen Republicans joined all Democrats to pass the legislation.

The bill would revamp America's legal immigration system, vastly increase security resources along the border with Mexico, and offer millions of undocumented immigrants a path to legal status and eventual citizenship.

However, leaders of the Republican-led House of Representatives say they won't vote on the Senate-passed bill.
