Sex Offender Regulations on Halloween

Halloween is two days away, and you may not have thought of one serious safety issue. Are your kids walking up to the door of a registered sex offender? How do you know?

Technically Colorado does not have a law saying a sex offender cannot hand out candy, though parole officers do not encourage it.

Officers say standard procedure in they instruct them not to participate by turning off their lights, not putting up decorations, and not answering the door. Usually this applies to sex offenders in general, though it can operate on a case by case basis.

Many offenders going through treatment will have a mandatory event to attend on Halloween night to eliminate temptation. Some parole officers will even make house calls to select offenders.

Since it can vary case by case, officers say the best way to keep your children safe is to know where the sex offenders live and avoid the area. You can find a link to the map, here
