Sheriff's Office investigates a phone scam

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is looking for suspect impersonating a deputy.

Over the past few days, the Sheriff's Office has investigated two cases in which the victims received a phone call where the caller identified himself as a Deputy from the El Paso County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect told the victim that they owed a fine and a credit card must be provided for payment. During each of these incidents, the victim called the originating number back and it returned to an internal number at the Sheriff's Office. The suspect is using a smart phone app where you can enter a number other than your own so the recipient of the call believes it is coming from somewhere else.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office wishes to remind people that the Sheriff's Office never calls and asks for money to be paid over the phone for any reason. If you have any information about these incidents or have experienced it first hand, please call the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Communications Center non-emergency number at 719-390-5555.
