It was all about protecting yourself from identity theft today in Pueblo at a shredding event.

It was completely free at five Credit Union of Colorado locations, including on Highway 50 in Pueblo.

People brought in everything from bank statements to tax return information.

It's only the second year for the event, but they hope to continue it annually.

"People go through trash, and they can steal your identity," said Theresa Dudley, Branch Supervisor at Credit Union of Colorado on Highway 50. "As a financial institution, we're here to help secure your identity and make sure that we try and prevent fraud at all possible costs."

They also took donations for Pueblo Community College, which go toward scholarships.

Three people are on scholarship this semester just from proceeds raised during last year's event.
