Ski business has picked up at Monarch Mountain

It started out slow, but the ski season at Monarch Mountain here in Southern Colorado has definitely picked up.

We found out days like today help out a lot.

"We had a late opening," said Greg Ralph, Director of Marketing at Monarch Mountain. "We didn't get open until December 14."

But the season would change.

"January dried out a little bit," said Ralph. "February's come back really strong with snow, and you can see what March is looking like right now."

And it kept coming down most of the day.

"It's not easy being a snow farmer, and here at Monarch, we don't have any man-made snow, so we have to rely on Mother Nature's help," said Ralph.

"There isn't a better day that you could possibly come out to Monarch than today," said Ken Godowski, a skier. "This is what we live for."

After the slow start to the season, those at Monarch Mountain were a little worried.

"Everybody was a little nervous," said Ralph. "Everybody was a little on edge when the season started slow and we came off last year's terrible season, but things are shaping up for a good year this year."

But now business is coming in.

"We don't come when it's hard pack, so we just wait for these kind of storms and we're here," said Godowski.

"Just really fluffy and nice, but this is really good," said Damien Mayo, who was out enjoying the slopes. "It's not too windy. Snow is nice and fluffy."

And they already have plans for more.

"We get a lot of reservations coming in online and through the phones," said Ralph. "A lot of those are out of state people right now reserving for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week as spring break comes in."

There's just a little over a month left in their season.

In just 24 hours, Monarch got five new inches of snow.

Breckenridge also got five, while Vail saw three and Wolf Creek got 16 new inches!

All are at 100 percent snow pack.

If you want to head out to monarch tomorrow, they're holding their Butterfly Roundup.

You can participate and search the entire grounds for monarch butterfly stickers worth different points.

The top three winners get a prize!

It all starts Sunday morning at ten on Monarch Mountain.
