A 23-year-old ski instructor has been found dead at the Steamboat ski area.

Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg says that Grace Lynn McNeil of Cedar, Mich., was found dead in a tree well under 2 feet of snow Wednesday morning. Ryg said she likely died Tuesday afternoon.

McNeil was a children's ski instructor at Arapahoe Basin Ski and Snowboard area. The Steamboat Pilot & Today newspaper reports that McNeil was in Steamboat skiing with other friends. Patrollers found McNeil's body at the base of a double-black-diamond run.

There was no immediate conclusion on what killed McNeil, but Ryg said she was wearing a helmet and that tree wells, areas of loose snow at the bases of trees, can cause suffocation.
