Skulls as big as a car door found in Aspen

SNOWMASS VILLAGE, Colo. (AP) - Researchers unearthing a slew of Ice Age era bones in western Colorado say they're baffled by a "bone bed" at an excavation site near Aspen.

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science said Wednesday they've discovered five mastodon pelvises, two tusks and two skulls in what used to be a lakebed in Snowmass Village. Researchers speculate that the bones are all in one place because the skeletons were on the shoreline before washing into the lake and sinking to the bottom.

Scientists say the skulls and pelvises are each about the size of a car door. A mastodon skull can weigh up to 600 pounds. Officials say they apply a plaster jacket to the bones to keep them intact when they dig them up from the ground.
