Sky Sox Fall 5-2 to the Express

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (64-57) dropped the second game of a four-game set with the Round Rock Express (54-67) Saturday by the score of 5-2 as a Sky Sox ninth-inning rally was cut short. The Sox brought the tying run to the plate with one out and runners on first and second but a game-ending double play ended the threat.

Rockies right-hander Jhoulys Chacin (0-1, 4.05 ERA) started for the Sky Sox as part of his Major League rehab assignment and turned in a solid outing despite taking the loss. Chacin was making his first appearance for the Sky Sox since August 10, 2010 and went 6.2 innings allowing three runs while striking out five. He threw 84 pitches with 52 strikes and didn't allow a fly ball until the fifth inning. On the night, Chacin recorded 12 groundball outs versus two fly ball outs.

Express lefty Zach Jackson (6-12) also made an impressive start as he gave up just two runs on eight hits over 7.2 innings of work. He was backed up by his offense who churned out 10 hits on the night with the biggest effort coming from leadoff hitter Leonys Martin. Martin finished the night 3-for-5 with a double and homer to go along with two runs scored and three RBI.

Round Rock got out to a 3-0 lead after the fifth but the Sky Sox cut the lead to 3-2 in the seventh when third baseman Brendan Harris belted his seventh homer of the year, a two-run shot, to left. The score remained that way until the ninth when the Express got two insurance runs off reliever Zach Putnam on RBI singles by Martin and shortstop Luis Hernandez. In the bottom half of the inning against reliever Willie Eyre, the Sox put two runners on with one out when Harris was hit by a pitch and Charlie Culberson singled. That brought Chad Tracy to the plate but an unlucky check swing led to an easy 1-6-3 double play to end the game and give Eyre his first save of the season.

Game three of the series is set for tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 PM. LH Nick Schmidt (4-2, 6.75) will take the mound for the Sky Sox as he faces off against former Sky Sox pitcher RH Greg Reynolds (9-7, 5.02). During the game, the Sky Sox will be wearing special "Socko" jerseys that will be auctioned off with all the proceeds benefitting the Rocky Mountain Lion Eye Bank in conjunction with Donate Life.
