A small wildfire is burning in the Great Sand Dunes National Park northeast of Alamosa.
The fire was started by lightning on June 6 and is located about four miles north of the park Visitor Center near Little Medano Creek. It is estimated at 17 acres in size and is not threatening visitors or buildings. Smoke from the fire may be visible from the main park road, the Visitor Center and some campgrounds. The wind has generally pushed the smoke to the east.
The Sand Ramp Trail is currently closed at the junction with Medano Pass Road. The rest of the park and preserve, including the dunes day use area, remains open to the public.
Firefighters will try to use the natural landscape features to try to contain it.
