Smithsonian adds LGBT history to museum collection

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Smithsonian is adding hundreds of photographs, papers and historical objects to its collection to document the history of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, including dozens of items from the popular TV sitcom "Will and Grace."

Show creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick will join a donation ceremony Tuesday at the National Museum of American History to hand over items from the series. The collection includes original scripts, casting ideas, political memorabilia surrounding the show and the series finale.

Kohan tells The Associated Press it's a "validation that we didn't even dream about when we first started doing the show." He says "Will and Grace" was both daring and conservative, showing people their close friends could be gay.

The museum is also accepting objects from political and sports history.
