The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has issued a Smoke Health Advisory for Southwestern Colorado. This advisory will be valid from 4 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2011 until 2 a.m. Sunday, June 5, 2011. Cities in this area include but are not limited to, Delta, Montrose, Gunnison, Telluride, Cortez, Durango, and Pagosa Springs.
The moderate to heavy smoke from the Wallow Fire in eastern Arizona is moving into southwestern Colorado. In parts of Southwestern Colorado the smoke could become unhealthy for sensitive groups this afternoon and evening. Individuals with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young and the elderly should limit prolonged exertion in these areas.
If visibility is less than five miles in your neighborhood due to smoke from a wildfire or a controlled burn, smoke has reached levels that are unhealthy. If smoke is thick or becomes thick in your neighborhood you may want to remain indoors. This is especially true for those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young, and the elderly. Consider limiting outdoor activity when moderate to heavy smoke is present. Consider relocating temporarily if smoke is present indoors and is making you ill.
