Snow & cold... then more snow & cold

LATEST WEATHER ADVISORIES: A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the mountains along and west of the Continental Divide. For the San Juans, 8-16" of snow is expected. For the central and northwest mountains, 10-20" of snow is expected. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until for the central and northern mountains east of the Divide, where 6-12" of snow is expected. A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect for the Plains along I-70 east of Metro Denver and including Limon. A Blizzard Warning is in effect for northeastern Colorado, where 4-8" of snow is possible.

WEATHER DISCUSSION: Low pressure developing in the Rockies will intensify tonight as it moves eastward toward the Great Plains. North of the low pressure circulation, upslope wind flow and a strong wind blowing into the low will generate blizzard conditions over northeastern Colorado with heavy snow possible over the High Country. Some of that snow will ease out to areas along I-25, including Colorado Springs and Pueblo. Totals will generally be a dusting to an inch, though areas in the upslope wind areas could see 2-5". Locally, those areas include Monument, Teller County, and the Wet Mountains. By sunrise Sunday, much of the snow will be gone from our area. High pressure will build in from the northwest, but south of the high pressure center within the clockwise wind flow a wind will pick up moisture off the Plains and send it up the east-facing slopes of the mountains. That will likely mean another round of snow along the Front Range. In fact, the odds may be better Sunday evening and overnight as compared to Saturday night for accumulating snow from Colorado Springs to Pueblo as well as the mountains just west of the I-25 corridor. The snow will linger into the first half of the day Monday and will end by Monday afternoon. The high pressure will meander east and set up so that weather in Southern Colorado is less active but unusually cold, even for early February. On Thursday another cold front blows in and could bring another dose of snow for much of our area and bringing a quick end to a brief warming trend.
