Snowpack delays opening of some campgrounds

The U.S. Forest Service - Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands (PSICC) will delay the opening of some campgrounds due to snowpack. The Leadville Ranger District of the San Isabel National Forest is reporting that many of the campgrounds won't be open in time for Memorial Day Weekend this year. A deeper than normal snowpack, cooler temperatures and more snow predicted is affecting the ability of the U.S. Forest Service - PSICC to get these campgrounds and picnic areas operational for visitors.

The Lake County road crews have been unable to plow the road around Turquoise Lake. The PSICC is currently planning to have the campgrounds and picnic areas at Turquoise Lake open on June 10. The campgrounds in the Halfmoon area are closed until then also.. Whitestar and Lakeview Campgrounds at Twin Lakes will be open for the Memorial Day Weekend on a reservation basis. Twin Peaks and Parry Peaks Campgrounds will be open on a first-come, first-served basis.

Reservations may be changed or cancelled at www.recreation.gov. If you have further questions please contact Recreation Program Manager, Neal Weierbach at (719)553-1510 with questions.
