Snowy changes on the way for Colorado

WEATHER DISCUSSION: Big changes are brewing for Colorado's weather, and those changes start with an area of low pressure that rolled of the Pacific Ocean late this week. That low pressure is sending a surge of deep moisture into Colorado that has generated an ocean of cloud cover across much of the state. From those clouds, rain showers developed over the Plains along and east of Interstate 25 on Saturday afternoon and evening. Those clouds are bringing snow to the High Country Saturday night and Sunday morning. Some of that snow could be quite heavy. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the San Juan Mountains, including Telluride and Wolf Creek Pass. In the San Juans, 10-16 inches of snow is expected. In spots, up to 2 feet of snow could fall. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the central Rockies, especially for the Sawatch Mountains between Leadville and Gunnison, where 5-10 inches of snow is expected. In spots, more than a foot of snow could fall. The heavier snow in the San Juans is expected to increase the threat for avalanches, so an Avalanche Watch has been issued for the San Juans. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center says this watch could be upgraded to a warning on Sunday morning. After about midmorning, Sunday looks to be a rather quiet day across much of Colorado, save for a few flurries over the mountains. With breaks in the clouds, temperatures should warm quickly into the 50's and 60's for much of our area with 40's in the cooler locations. Sunday night, another surge of moisture comes in ahead of another storm system that drops into Colorado from the north. That will mean another round of potentially heavy snow for the mountains Sunday night and throughout Monday. Overnight Monday and Tuesday morning, that mountain snow could spread eastward to the Front Range and the Plains. Snow could even fall in Colorado Springs and Pueblo, but it will be short-lived. Tuesday night, however, temperatures fall hard into the single digits in the coldest locations and teens in the less cold areas. Wednesday will be cold, especially with such a cold start to the morning. Thursday marks the beginning of a warming trend that will roll into the weekend.
