WASHINGTON (AP) - Social Security and Medicare aren't looking as healthy in their latest checkup. The government says the Medicare hospital insurance fund will now be exhausted in 2024 -- five years earlier than in last year's estimate. And the Social Security trust fund will be empty in 2036. That's a year earlier than in the last prediction.

The bad economy gets the blame. Trustees say it shows the need for Congress to make changes to the programs.
