Soldier in Taliban slaying tries suicide in prison

DENVER (AP) - The father of a soldier who pleaded guilty to killing a suspected Taliban captive says his son attempted suicide in prison three weeks ago but is doing better since mental health officials changed his medication.

Pfc. David Lawrence is serving a 10-year term at the Army's Fort Leavenworth, Kan., prison after pleading guilty in May to shooting the prisoner in a jail cell in Afghanistan in October 2010. He was assigned to a unit from Fort Carson, Colo., at the time.

His father, Brett Lawrence of Lawrenceburg, Ind., says his son slit his wrists because he was hearing voices and having hallucinations.

Brett Lawrence says a civilian psychiatrist diagnosed his son as having schizophrenia. One Army evaluation also found he had schizophrenia but a second found no severe mental illness.
