TELLURIDE, Colo. (AP) - Wounded soldiers preparing for a fundraising race to the South Pole this fall are training in Colorado.
The four U.S. soldiers who will participate in the Walking with the Wounded race with Prince Harry are in Telluride for a week. They began their training Thursday with a technical hike on a narrow trail along the box canyon which surrounds the town.
They included Capt. Ivan Castro of Fort Bragg, who was blinded after mortar shells exploded near him in Iraq. He hiked the Via Ferrata with his arm on the pack of the teammate in front of him, anchored to the cable that lines the route.
Besides the physical challenges, he said the training offers a great chance for the team to bond for the long days they'll spend on skis racing in Antarctica.
