Hail season is underway in Southern Colorado. Mid-April to mid-August is when we see most hail storms. Thursday afternoon's storm took motorists by surprise.
"At about Woodmen, it started hailing and I had to get off at Academy because my car was sliding all over," says Jessica Bauer.
According to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association, the front range is located in the heart of hail alley. We get the highest frequency of large hail in the country.
Although Thursday's hail stones were relatively average in size, bigger stones can cause severe damage. In the last 10 years, hail caused more than $3 billion in damage across the state.
