Mayor lays out agenda

Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach announced a restructuring in the city administration naming four positions that would report directly to him: the city attorney, communications director, chief of staff and a new economic vitality adviser.

Bach said he has four goals for the yet to be named economic vitality advisor. They are to improve the city's business climate, build goodwill with existing and primary employers, encourage the success and growth of start-up companies and to celebrate and promote pride in the city through what he calls the Spirit of the Springs.

Bach also announced his selection of fire chief Steve Cox as his chief of staff. He interviewd 17 candidates for the position and decided that Cox was the best pick. He likes Cox's experience in government management and the skill set he brings to the job.

"He's seasoned, he's well known inside and outside the city government," Bach said. He added that in their conversations, Bach got the sense that Cox is an entrepreneur in many ways.

"He is not only willing but I think enthusiastic about thinking outside the box to transform our city government."

Bach additionally announced that Stephannie Finley from the Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce has been appointed to an unpaid position as an executive adviser. Finnely will serve the mayor for a term of 30 days before returning to the chamber.

"She has a long background including having organized a freshman congressional office and has served the chamber in their politicall affairs division for quite a while, I'm just very thankful to have her help."

Among her duties with the city will be to review and reshape the public communications department and help with the selection of a new communications director. Former communications director Sue Skiffington-Blumberg resigned from the postion on May 31.
